Siddhānta — the theory
M ithuna is the first sign that knows it is not alone. Where Meṣa was the single spark and Vṛṣabha the ground that held it, Mithuna is the moment the one becomes two and turns to speak. The twins are not rivals but mirror and echo — mind meeting mind, the breath that goes out as a word and returns as understanding. Before we open the two lenses, hold one image: a single point dividing, and a bridge of dialogue thrown across the gap.

Mithuna is a dvisvabhāva, vāyu rāśi ruled by Budha, and the arms and hands of the Kālapuruṣa. The very name means a pair — the first sign of two-ness and union; here the rooted substance of Vṛṣabha learns to move, to pair, and to speak.
Mithuna is spirit discovering the other — the soul learning that it is twofold, mind and its mirror, and that knowledge is born in the meeting. The work of the path is to ripen the restless gathering of facts into true understanding: to let the many voices become one clear voice, and to use the word to unite rather than to divide. Curiosity, ripened, becomes wisdom.

Ruled by Mercury, it lives by exchange — words, ideas, news, the line drawn between two things. Its gift is adaptability and wit; its danger is restlessness, a mind so quick it never lands.

A field has a character. When Mithuna falls on the Sun, the Moon, or the rising degree, it stamps a life with a face you can recognise across a room. Here is that face, drawn in full — the gift it carries, the shadow it must master, and how it meets love, work and the body. Read it as the sign's archetype, true wherever the sign happens to sit.
The Twins of the Greeks — the Couple, a man and a woman, of the Indian telling. Two who face each other and exchange: this is the sign of pairing, of connection and conversation, of the mind that holds two things at once and weighs the traffic between them. Its native gift is to understand others and to tell their good from their bad.
Adaptable and intellectual — the great connector, at your best in negotiation, arbitration and brokerage. You can bring together two of unlike natures, wring the most from the least resource, and organise people and institutions to their fullest use. Company is lively around you and life stays eventful and meaningful.
The keen critical eye can curdle into endless fault-finding, until you are shunned. Doubt and vacillation breed indecision; over-thinking blocks action — you counsel others wisely yet cannot take your own advice. You lose yourself in company, and interfere in what is not yours to manage.
Hesitation can delay it unduly, and a cool, intellectual attitude cools the ardour. Guard against letting intellectualism come between you and domestic happiness — decide, and do not doubt your partner into distance.
Collecting and editing — critic, lexicographer, journalist, editor; communication, printing and publishing; post, telegraph, radio and TV; codes and shorthand. An intellectual calling more than a manual one.
Delicate but resilient; careless of food and routine, which undermines you. Over-thinking brings nervousness, neuralgia and insomnia; long walking, pains in the spine and shoulders; in age, acidity and constipation.
Older still than the reading of character is the reading of kind. Each rāśi was seen to bring forth its own order of living things — and though a human being is born under every sign, the creature's stamp lingers as a faint thread in bearing and appetite. Mithuna brings forth wholly the human kind — the coupled pair, no animal born under it.

When the sign is strong, look for a doubled, quick-changing manner — two natures at once, shaping itself to whoever stands before it, all hands and voice and nerve.
